Includes liner notes by Holger Czukay.Two generational delegates of German music meet during the 1997 tours of Can bassist and co-founder Czukay and Dr. Walker (Ingmar Koch), half of techno duo Air Liquide. Many years separate the elder statesman and the young turk, but both are bonded by place (each calls Cologne home) and by mutual admiration. Czukay secretly yearned to participate in the dance experimentation perpetuated by Air Liquide and its kin. But stage fright (precipitated by a disastrous 1977 Can gig) dissuaded him from venturing back into the arena. When Dr. Walker invited Czukay to join him for a series of German (and, later, American) dates, the reluctant bassist could resist no longer.The double-disc CLASH contains recordings of the duo`s performances in Cologne, San Francisco, and Minneapolis. It`s far more than a generation gap-spanning curiosity. While Dr. Walker pumps out the beats–a catchy mix of blunted hip-hop and pneumatic techno–and electronics, Czukay picks up where he left off–combining cutting-edge sampling work with his trademark dictaphone and radio treatments. His limitless supply of unexpected and inventive sounds adds texture and ample intrigue to Dr. Walker`s mix, making each of these lengthy improvisations an engrossing and surprisingly satisfying sonic adventure.
