Why does Kiwanis not allow Schirmer Editions of Bach Music?

Just out of curiosity… is there something wrong with that edition ?

I will assume that you are correct, and just answer the question. It does seem odd that they would disallow that, but whatever.

Yes, by and large, Schirmer editions of Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart are not very good. They were edited by 19th century artists, and they encrusted the music with personal dynamics, bad notes, and other very bad choices. In that arena, Henle and Vienna Urtext are some of the best, and I wouldn’t dream of playing these composer’s works without consulting them.

However, that is not always true – the Schirmer Bach Goldberg Variations (Kirkpatrick) is an excellent edition. So it is always wise to consult good urtexts when learning this repertoire.
