What movie was made of an opera updated to the 50s or 60s: the protagonists a young woman and a mechanic?

possibly a French opera, the movie was an award winner, played a lot on cable a few years back… sorry this is all I can remember.

the movie updates the opera to the 50s or 60s but I believe the movie was made during the 70s or 80s lots of brilliant colors – what I remember is the girl wants to date the mechanic but the mother doesn’t want this to happen — they end up running off together near the end. I think a diner is prominent also. I have never seen the whole thing just moments on the tv and would like to see the whole thing hence this question.

Please clarify: was the movie from the 50s or 60s or was set there?
