The Music Man [VHS] $8.99 The Music Man was one of the last great movie musicals from any studio, and it proved to be that rarest of events: a Broadway show that was measurably improved by its transition to the screen. Robert Preston made his musical debut–both live and on film–as “Professor” Harold Hill, the upbeat charlatan who promises to teach a small-town boys band by the “think system.” But it’s the part Preston wa… |

Evening Star [VHS] $7.25 Picking up the story thread left by 1983′s Terms of Endearment, this overwrought sequel is made palatable by Shirley MacLaine’s charismatic performance, which in turn is nearly equaled by Marion Ross’s role as her housekeeper. An unexpected surprise, Ross obviously was never allowed to display her range as Mrs. Cunningham on Happy Days. Returning as the vibrant Aurora Greenway, MacLaine far outshi… |

Shirley Scott – Shirley Scott & The Soul Saxes $12.97 Personnel: Shirley Scott (organ); Eric Gale (guitar); Chuck Rainey (electric guitar, electric bass); David "Fathead" Newman , King Curtis (flute, tenor saxophone); Hank Crawford (alto saxophone, baritone saxophone, brass); Ernie Royal (trumpet); Richard Tee (piano); Jerry Jemmott (electric bass); Jimmy Johnson , Jimmy Johnson, Jr. , Bernard "Pretty" Purdie (drums).Audio Remixer: William Arlt.Liner Note Author: Joel Dorn.Recording information: New York, NY (09/10/1968-07/10/1969).Arranger: Marty Sheller. The idea of a soul-jazz album full of well-worn chestnuts like the Isley Brothers` "It`s Your Thing," Ben E. King`s "Stand By Me," and Goffin/King/Wexler`s "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" might seem a bit pedestrian at first. But once Hammond B-3 maestro Shirley Scott sets her instrument swirling with the deeply groovy assistance of her lockstep R&B backing band, the results are nearly irresistible. It doesn`t hurt that Scott`s band includes saxophonists King Curtis (tenor sax), Hank Crawford (alto and baritone), and David Newman (on tenor and flute), who provide fat, brash punctuation and some fine solos throughout.A crack rhythm section lays down the foundation for some funky, passionate playing, as on the group`s reading of "You" and a fun, rave-up take on the Beatles` "Get Back." Scott`s playing is at the center, however, and her gospel-inflected melodies and bebop-inspired runs imbue every track with equal doses of grit and grace. Wholly accessible, yet overflowing with technical chops, SHIRLEY SCOTT & THE SOUL SAXES will fit the bill for those who get a kick out of deep-down soul-jazz. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Shirley Scott – Legends Of Acid Jazz $10.98 Personnel includes: Shirley Scott, Stanley Turrentine, Herb Lewis, Roy Brooks, George Tucker, Otis Finch Jr.Recorded in June & November 1961.Personnel: Stanley Turrentine (tenor saxophone); Roy Brooks (drums).Audio Remasterer: Joe Tarantino.Liner Note Authors: Tom Wilson; Joe Goldberg.Recording information: Van Gelder Studios, Englewood Cliffs, NJ (06/02/1961/11/17/1961).Unknown Contributor Roles: George Tucker; Roy Brooks; Otis Finch.A smart combination of two 1961 albums, Hip Soul and Hip Twist, both of which featured Stanley Turrentine on sax. Hip Soul is the smokier and livelier of the pair, especially on "Stanley`s Time" and the Turrentine-composed title track; the material is delivered with a taut intelligence. Hip Twist doesn`t suffer much in comparison, though, and gives Scott a bit more presence, as she introduces several themes with impassioned swirls; unlike Hip Soul, it has a couple of tunes from her own pen. ~ Richie Unterberger Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Shirley Scott – Trio Classics Vol. 1 * $11.86 2 LPs on 1 CD: GREAT SCOTT! (1958)/SHIRLEY`S SOUNDS (1958).Personnel: Shirley Scott (organ); Shirley Scott; George Duvivier (double bass); George Tucker (bass guitar); Arthur Edgehill (drums).Audio Remasterer: Joe Tarantino.Liner Note Authors: Ira Gitler; Joe Goldberg.Recording information: Van Gelder Studios, Hackensack, NJ (05/23/1958).Shirley Scott`s name is sometimes left off the list of soul-jazz organists from the 1950s and `60s, which is a shame because her nimble keyboard work and swinging, soulful feel rank alongside the best. TRIO CLASSICS, VOL. 1, collects work from a session cut in `58, and features two albums of material (the tracks were originally released on GREAT SCOTT! and SHIRLEY`S SOUNDS, respectively). As the title indicates, these are trio dates, with drummer Arthur Edgehill and bassist George Tucker rounding out the group. Scott`s approach to the organ is polished and assured, yet her solos contain plenty of bop-influenced intensity, as on "(Back Home Again In) Indiana." She also vibes on Latin rhythms ("Brazil"), downshifts impressively to smoky blues ("I Can`t See For Lookin`"), and tackles several standards ("Bye Bye Blackbird"). Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Eddie Lockjaw Davis/Shirley Scott – Bacalao $10.98 Full performer name: Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis/Shirley Scott.Personnel: Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis (tenor saxophone); Shirley Scott (organ); George Duvivier (bass); Luis PErez (bongos, conga); Ray Barretto (conga); Arthur Edgehill (drums).Recorded at the Rudy Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on December 20, 1959.When it came to tenor saxophonists, the late organist Shirley Scott had excellent taste. One of the big-toned tenor men she worked with extensively was Stanley Turrentine, whom she married; another was Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis. Recorded in Rudy Van Gelder`s New Jersey studio in 1959, Bacalao is among the many solid hard bop/soul-jazz albums that resulted from Davis` association with Scott. The two of them enjoyed an incredibly strong rapport in the late `50s and early `60s, and they are very much in sync on Bacalao (which unites them with bassist George Duvivier, drummer Arthur Edgehill, and two Latin percussion men: Luis Perez and salsa giant Ray Barretto). The presence of Perez and Barretto gives the album some Afro-Cuban appeal, and both of them do well by Davis and Scott — who are in fine form whether they turn their attention to two James Moody items ("Last Train From Overbrook" and "Dobbin` With Redd Foxx") or well-known pop standards (which include "That Old Black Magic," "Sometimes I`m Happy," "When Your Lover Has Gone," and "Come Rain or Come Shine"). In the liner notes that he wrote for Bacalao in 1959 or 1960, Amiri Baraka (formerly Leroi Jones) describes "Come Rain or Come Shine" and "That Old Black Magic" as "old beat-up tunes"; even back then, those Harold Arlen standards were considered warhorses. But Baraka also goes on to say that Davis and his colleagues revitalize the songs. Organ combo soul-jazz was still new and fresh in 1959, and Scott was helping Davis find new ways to interpret very familiar melodies. Although not quite essential, Bacalao is a rewarding example of Davis` ability to thrive in an organ/tenor setting. ~ Alex Henderson Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. Shirley Temple – Susannah of the Mounties $13.46 The sole survivor of an Indian attack, orphan girl Susannah Sheldon (Shirley Temple) becomes the mascot of the Canadian Mountie outpost headed by Superintendent Standing (Moroni Olsen). Mountie Angus Monty Montague (Randolph Scott) and his sweetheart (and Standing’s daughter), Vicky (Margaret Lockwood), appoint themselves as Susannah’s unofficial parents, doing their best to help the girl overcome her terrible ordeal. Eventually, it is little miss fix-itSusannah who brings peace between the Mounties and the Blackfeet, but not before Monty is nearly burned at the stake by the renegade Indian responsible for fomenting all the trouble. This is the film in which Shirley Temple not only teaches Randolph Scott how to tap dance, but also shares a peace pipe with a Blackfoot youngster (and gets good and nauseated in the process). Based on a novel by Muriel Denison, Susannah of the Mounties was originally released in sepiatone. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide |

An Introduction to Shirley Bassey $10.98 Shirley Bassey’s stateside acclaim is derived, almost exclusively, from her stints as James Bond theme crooner, but her U.K. appeal is monstrous. It’s a pity that this Fuel collection doesn’t include more of her U.K. output — instead choosing to feature more of her middle-of-the-road readings of ’80s American ballads. Songs like”He’s Out of My Life” (a female-oriented turn on Michael Jackson’s weeper), “That’s What Friends Are For,” and “Greatest Love of All” find Bassey coasting (albeit most dramatically) rather than digging in and serving up that husky swagger she made a career out of. “Goldfinger,” “Climb Every Mountain,” and “Big Spender” certainly provide the proof of this Welsh diva’s talents, but there’s not enough of this period’s output here to convince any skeptical Americans that she was anything more than a Bond theme girl. For a trusty and more flattering sample of her best work, EMI’s Goldsinger: The Best of Shirley Bassey is a great place to start. ~ J. Scott McClintock, Rovi |
